Job Title: Grants Data Coordinator

Legal Services of New Jersey, a non-profit mission driven organization that coordinates the statewide Legal Services network providing free civil legal assistance to people living in poverty, seeks a full-time Grants Data Coordinator to serve as the data collection and reporting specialist for a specific portfolio of LSNJ project grants.  Some responsibilities include engaging in qualitative analysis of grant data; overseeing a portfolio of grants with responsibility of compliance reporting and grant monitoring including performance of contractual partners and timeliness of grant submission. This role is vital in supporting our nonprofit legal services’ grant management processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing Grant Subrecipients' Budgets and Reports: Assist in scrutinizing budgets and quarterly reports from grant subrecipients to ensure adherence to grant stipulations.
  • Grant Summary Reports: Develop and maintain detailed reports summarizing grant activities and financial statuses.
  • Statewide Summary Reports: Compile extensive statewide reports to facilitate strategic planning and reporting.
  • Quarterly Subrecipient Expenses: Assist with managing and maintaining records of quarterly expenses submitted by subcontractors, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Grant Reporting Coordination: Proactively follow up with programs and internal staff regarding grant reporting deadlines and requirements.
  • Grant Announcements and Transmittals: Aid in the preparation and distribution of grant announcements and manage payment transmittals.

BA/BS degree, strong data analysis, Microsoft excel/word skills and excellent writing and communication skills required.  Experience with grants in a nonprofit environment; knowledge of program budgeting (grant compliance and outcome measurement) and experience working in a nonprofit institution highly desirable.

We seek an experienced fundraising professional to design and execute a strategic development plan aimed at maximizing financial support, from both public and private sectors, for the mission and work of the New Jersey Legal Services system. Responsibilities:

  • Identify and cultivate potential major donors, including law firms, corporate gifts and foundation support

LAMP attorneys will practice in a number of areas including the following:  special education and guardianship, housing and entitlements (SSI/SSDI, food stamps, TANF and GA), as well as healthcare access (Medicaid and Medicare denials). 

We will consider individuals with various levels of relevant legal experience. An ideal candidate would have legal experience on one or more of the areas listed above.  Successful candidates will have the ability to work and communicate effectively with low-income clients. Training is offered to staff especially in new substantive legal areas and regular case review meetings are held in Edison.

The project has office space at several hospitals in NJ and the position is based out of Edison, as well as at one or more of these provider facilities.  Additionally, LAMP staff provide outreach and education to hospital staff and to families served by those hospitals.

This is a full-time, in-person position that requires a highly organized person with excellent interpersonal, time-management, and computer skills, along with a deep interest in aiding immigrants and their families.  Duties will include handling client and intake calls; coordinating and opening case intakes; and providing general administrative support. Additional duties include greeting clients and other visitors; managing mail, supply orders and other office needs; and filing and picking up documentation at the Newark Immigration Court and Elizabeth Detention Center. Spanish fluency strongly preferred.

  • Eviction Protection Project- address housing related issues including but not limited to: housing insecurity, evictions, imminent homelessness, related entitlements issues, initiating community referrals, researching resources, advocacy, and collaboration with community agencies. 
  • Domestic Violence- work with attorneys on behalf of clients and involve assessing and addressing victims’ overall needs in a holistic manner and maintaining a resource list for use throughout LSNJ. Assist victims in accessing resources as well as support them   through the family court process, including accompanying them to court.

You will also be involved in community and client education and outreach activities, and system reform projects to identify and develop strategies to protect, preserve and expand the housing rights and opportunities for low-income people. Such strategies will be multi-pronged, including individual representation in eviction defense, litigation, legislative and administrative policy advocacy, and community education and engagement.

We will consider individuals with various level of relevant legal experience:

  • those with expertise in housing law and policy, landlord tenant issues, eviction defense, fair housing and race equity, and litigation and/or policy advocacy
  • as well as recent graduates with a significant interest in housing law, a commitment to advocacy on behalf of low income marginalized people including immigrant communities and other relevant experience.

Job Title: Managing Attorney-Consumer Law Unit

Northeast New Jersey Legal Services (NNJLS) seeks a Managing Attorney to supervise its Consumer Unit. The position is full-time with the ability to work a hybrid schedule.

Northeast New Jersey Legal Services’ mission is to ensure equal access to justice for low-income residents of Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic Counties, New Jersey. NNJLS provides a full array of free legal services in civil matters, including legal representation, advocacy, advice, community legal education, and other legal services. Offices are within easy commuting distance from Northern New Jersey and New York City via public transportation.

The Managing Attorney will supervise the work of all unit casehandlers including paralegals. Supervision includes but is not limited to, designing and implementing unit priorities and case handling protocols, providing training to new attorneys, overseeing the overall performance and day-to-day activities of the unit, and working alongside other managers to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of services to clients. The Managing Attorney will also carry a limit caseload. Some travel between offices is required.

The Managing Attorney must be admitted to practice law in the State of New Jersey and have at least seven years of Consumer Law practice experience.  Excellent writing and oral advocacy skills are also required. Prior Legal Services experience or a demonstrated commitment to legal assistance for low-income communities is preferred. Prior supervisory experience is a plus.   • Fielding requests for information and NNJLS involvement in community events and evaluating appropriate level of engagement based on priorities and resources.
  • Using and supporting use of technology to compile, analyze, and share quantitative and qualitative data regarding community engagement activities and its impact.
  • Other related activities identified by the Program

Qualifications: A college degree with experience working with coalitions and/or community groups. The successful applicant will have: excellent and versatile communication skills; the ability to work collaboratively; and strong organizational skills. Applicants should have a good understanding of and/or be willing to learn about the role of civil legal aid in addressing issues of poverty and social justice. Computer proficiency is required. Flexibility and ability to work occasional evenings and weekends are essential.

Preferred: Familiarity with and/or working with legal services, public interest programs, and non-profit organizations. Bilingual skills are a plus.

The Program Manager’s primary responsibility include:

  • Client Outreach Strategic Planning: work with the NNJLS Community Outreach & Engagement Manager to develop and implement a PBPP Client Outreach plan, including strategies for engaging clients with NNJLS and PBPP.
  • Data Management: develop and implement a data collection plan, including tracking data on client participation in various legal services; develop, collect and analyze client surveys; and utilize program data to evaluate, improve and promote PBPP.
  • Technology Planning: research, develop and implement a technology plan to better utilize available resources for improved client experience and data collection.
  • Clinic Strategic Planning: identify new areas of law for legal clinics and work with volunteer attorneys to create and implement new clinics and presentations; and develop necessary presentation, client presentations and internal processes for all new clinic offerings.

In addition to these responsibilities, the Program Manager will assist in the coordination of pro bono services by overseeing the client intake process, tracking clients as they process through the PBPP system, and ensuring compliance with both NNJLS and PBPP policies and procedures. The Program Manager will work with PBPP Coordinators to ensure that clients are placed in the appropriate PBPP program, and will oversee the process to ensure that the client receives timely services. 

The Program Manager will also be responsible for organizing and providing administrative support to all PBPP clinic programs, including working with clients to complete necessary paperwork, tracking attendance, assessing the need for follow-up services at the conclusion of the clinic and all necessary referrals for legal representation as needed. The Program Manager will report to the Director of PBPP and supervise both PBPP Coordinators. The Program Manager will also work closely with the PBPP Coordinating Attorney to ensure clients are matched with volunteer attorneys.

Strong writing and speaking skills are required for this position. Preferred certification or experience as a Project Management Professional and/or experience in non-profit project management but not required. Job Title: Senior Attorney—Agricultural Workers’ Rights Project – Based in Vineland NJ (Program Wide Position)

South Jersey Legal Services, Inc. is seeking qualified candidates to fill an available position as Senior Attorney in our office/unit as listed above. Under the direction of the Managing Attorney, the Staff Attorney provides the highest quality of legal services to SJLS clients in a variety of poverty law matters and issues, primarily focusing on legal issues affecting agricultural workers throughout SJLS’ nine (9) county program area. The Staff Attorney also acts as a liaison between SJLS and the local community groups and engages in community outreach, community legal education.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Handle intake interviews;
  • Provide advice and direct representation to eligible agricultural worker clients in a variety of simple and complex matters, including but not limited to the following: Violations of the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker’s Protection Act; violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act; health and safety violations in the fields or in labor housing; pesticide use in the fields; sanitation issues in the fields; enforcing the rights of agricultural guest workers under H2A Temporary Foreign Worker Program violations; immigration issues related to agricultural workers; wage claim and employment issues; and assisting agricultural workers who are victims of illegal labor trafficking;
  • Provide direct representation to clients in a variety of other legal matters as needed by the Neighborhood Office, including but not limited to family, landlord/tenant, housing, consumer, public benefits, healthcare, employment and senior issues;
  • Conduct intake interviews, factual investigation and legal research of claims of agricultural worker clients. In cases having merit, drafting and filing affirmative lawsuits on behalf of agricultural worker clients and provide direct legal representation to such clients in federal and state courts and administrative agencies;
  • Conduct extensive outreach to and community legal education activities for agricultural workers—which may include evening and weekends — at labor
  • camps, farms, packing plants and other works sites;
  • Engage in extensive networking and coordination with local community groups and with state and federal government agencies advocating and protecting the rights of agricultural workers;
  • Participate in group representation, where appropriate;
  • Participate in staff and case acceptance meetings and program wide working groups;
  • Work with the Managing Attorney, Director of Litigation and/or the Executive Director in planning, developing and litigating significant impact cases;
  • Participate in community outreach and community legal education, clinics and seminars;
  • Assisting in preparing grant reports;
  • Develop new ideas and methods to provide service to clients;
  • Work with other staff as an effective member of the team;
  • Assist in supervising paralegals, clerical workers and students;
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION:

  • A minimum of 5-years’ legal experience, preferably working with agricultural workers and/or labor law matters.
  • Admission to the Bar of New Jersey preferred but not required. Must be a member of the Bar in any State or be eligible and willing to take the next available New Jersey Bar Exam;
  • Must be able to work flexible hours that will include evenings and some weekends, especially during the harvesting/work season;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle as there will be extensive travel required. (Mileage reimbursement is available).
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) required;
  • Ability to relate to low income clients and groups with demonstrated interest in poverty law issues and/or public interest service.

Under the direction of the Managing Attorney, the Intake Paralegal is responsible for answering incoming telephone calls from prospective clients to determine their eligibility for services; conducting the initial legal interview, and providing information or referral to a SJLS attorney/office as appropriate.

Required Education and Qualifications:

  • Associated Degree or Paralegal Certification preferred;
  • One year paralegal experience preferred, preferably in a legal services environment;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

  • Sensitivity to low-income individuals and families.
