Deborah T. Poritz Summer Public Interest Legal Fellowship Program

The Deborah T. Poritz Fellowship is a paid public-interest summer program open to students who will have completed their first or second year of law school as of June 2026.

Students placed in this summer program gain experience in a wide variety of legal issues affecting the poor. Activities typically include client interviewing, legal and factual research, drafting legal documents, administrative agency appearances and, for students who have completed two years of law school, court appearances and more in-depth case involvement.

NON-PAID INTERNSHIPS:

LSNJ Hotline - Spring, Summer and Fall Internships

LSNJ has several unpaid internship positions available with the LSNJLAWSM Hotline Unit. The Hotline accepts interns for a 10 – 15 hours a week commitment for twelve to thirteen weeks. Hours available between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

LSNJLAWSM HOTLINE INTERNS: The LSNJLAWSM Hotline provides advice and referral to low-income people who have civil legal issues in New Jersey. A substantial part of our work involves family and tenancy legal issues. However, the Hotline staff give advice to self-represented individuals in many civil legal matters from bankruptcy to wills and estates.

A Hotline interns’ tasks include:

  • Reaching out to applicants who have submitted an online intake requesting Legal Services
  • Screening callers for the type(s) of legal problem(s) they are experiencing, evaluating income eligibility, and determining if the case type is one that falls within LSNJ’s programmatic guidelines
  • Interviewing the prospective client following a questionnaire script for the particular case type/problem
  • Entering, in real-time, information into the computerized case management database in a clear and concise manner

The position requires sensitivity, attention to detail, and explicit recognition of the scope of attorney-client confidentiality.
