Family Unification Day Celebration

As part of the annual nationwide American Bar Association Family Reunification effort, Legal Services of New Jersey hosted its 2022 Family Unification Day on Thursday, June 23, at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick. The event honored families and their heroes, who have successfully prevented removal, or been reunified with their children after involvement with the NJ Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCPP).

After a two-year hiatus from celebrating these families in-person due to the COVID-pandemic, the air was filled with excitement and celebration. Keynote speaker, the Honorable Michael P. Wright of the Morris County Vicinage Family Division spoke on diversity and making reasonable efforts before removing children from their families. A video capturing two clients’ journey with DCPP involvement and how they reunited or remained united with their children was showcased, and a breathtaking performance and powerful speech on the lasting effects that removal has on parents even after they are reunited with their children was provided by April Lee, Director of Client Voice and Peer Parent Advocate with Community Legal Services of Philadelphia. This event ended with cheering on the honorees and heroes who have successfully remained united or reunited back with their children, after for some, years of separation from their children.
