Job Title: Staff Attorney—Atlantic County

South Jersey Legal Services, Inc. is seeking qualified candidates to fill an available position as Staff Attorney in the Atlantic County office.  Under the direction of the Managing Attorney, the Staff Attorney provides the highest quality of legal services to SJLS clients in a variety of poverty law matters. The Staff Attorney also acts as a liaison between SJLS and the local community groups and engages in community outreach and community legal education.

Required Education and Qualifications:

  • Admission to the Bar of New Jersey preferred but not required. Must be a member of the Bar in any State and/or be eligible and willing to take the next available New Jersey Bar Exam;
  • Two to Five years’ experience preferred;
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred;
  • Ability to relate positively to low-income clients and groups with demonstrated interest in poverty law issues and/or public interest service.

Job Title: Managing Attorney—Atlantic County Office (Atlantic City)

South Jersey Legal Services, Inc. is seeking qualified candidates to fill available position as a Managing Attorney in the Atlantic City office which serves Atlantic County. The Managing Attorney role is to:

To assure the highest quality of legal representation by the Atlantic County Office; to manage, supervise and provide leadership to attorneys, paralegals and support staff; to engage in impact representation, litigation planning and strategy, and community education within the community; to be a confidential member of the SJLS management team and to work with the Executive Director, Deputy Director and Director of Litigation and Advocacy in ensuring compliance with all rules, regulations and funding requirements of the program.

Special Duties:

  • Developing and maintain good local bar/bench relations;
  • Assisting with recruitment for the Private Attorney Involvement (PAI) Program;
  • Providing legal representation to eligible individuals and groups;
  • Engaging in representation on matters that affect the client community and/or which seek to effectuate systematic change in conditions that adversely affect the client community;
  • Coordinating, with the local legal and client community, establishment of office goals and priorities;
  • Where appropriate and/or necessary, serving as co-counsel;
  • Directly managing and monitoring of all legal and non-legal staff in the office(s); including recommendations for hiring, discipline and firing, in accordance with company policies and procedures and collective bargaining agreements;
  • Hiring of clerical staff for the office; (temporaries), with approval of the Executive Director;
  • Assuring the timely attendance of personnel at work assignments, including: approving time sheets; granting approval to accrue compensatory hours, approving or denying requests for paid leave of absences, issuing warning notices;
  • Timekeeping;
  • Deploying office staff and assigning cases as needed;
  • Providing training to staff on a day-to-day basis;
  • Attending and actively participating in management meetings;
  • Representing Management in the handling of employee grievances;
  • Contributing to the formulation of personnel directives;
  • Assisting in developing and coordinating necessary training;
  • Developing legal education activities in the Legal Services and local Bar communities;
  • Evaluating the performance and capability of the attorneys, paralegals and other staff working in the unit(s) to which s/he is assigned;
  • Developing and implementing systematic approaches to legal problem solving;
  • Preparing reports and applications for funding sources and government agencies;
  • Working with administration in ensuring the unit/office has adequate supplies;
  • Overseeing the function and maintenance of the physical office; and
  • Performing additional duties assigned by the Executive Director, the Deputy Director and Director of Litigation and Advocacy Directors.

Required Education and Qualifications:

  • Admission to practice law in New Jersey;
  • Graduation from an accredited law school;
  • Ability to relate to low income clients and groups with demonstrated interest in poverty law issues and/or public interest service;
  • At least 5 years of legal experience;
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory capabilities;
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

The Staff Attorney also acts as a liaison between SJLS and the local community groups and engages in community outreach and community legal education.

Required Education and Qualifications:

Job Title: Staff Attorney—Agricultural Workers’ Rights Project (Program-Wide) & Neighborhood Office (Vineland)

South Jersey Legal Services, Inc. is seeking qualified candidates to fill an available position as Staff Attorney in the Cumberland/Salem County office and Agricultural Workers Unit.  Under the direction of the Managing Attorney, the Staff Attorney provides the highest quality of legal services to SJLS clients in a variety of poverty law matters and issues, primarily focusing on legal issues affecting agricultural workers throughout SJLS’ nine (9) county program area. The Staff Attorney also acts as a liaison between SJLS and the local community groups and engages in community outreach, community legal education.

Required Education and Qualifications:

  • Admission to the Bar of New Jersey preferred but not required. Must be a member of the Bar in any State or be eligible and willing to take the next available New Jersey Bar Exam;
  • Must be able to work flexible hours that will include evenings and some weekends, especially during the harvesting/work season;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle as there will be extensive travel required. (Mileage reimbursement is available).
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) required;
  • Ability to relate to low income clients and groups with demonstrated interest in poverty law issues and/or public interest service.

Job Title: Paralegal I or II—Consumer Law Unit - Freehold

Job Summary: Under the direction and supervision of the Managing Attorney and Staff Attorney(s), the Paralegal works with other attorneys and advocates to provide legal representation to South Jersey Legal Services’ clients in a variety of legal matters affecting poor people.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with client intake and interviews;
  • Assist in all phases of litigation including investigation, research, interviewing, writing and preparing pleadings;
  • Under supervision and direction of an attorney, preparation and filing of pleadings;
  • Participate in staff and case acceptance meetings;
  • Work with the Managing Attorney, Staff Attorney(s), and others in planning, developing and implementing community outreach and community legal education programs and materials;
  • Develop new ideas and methods to provide service to clients;
  • Work with other staff as an effective member of the team;
  • Service of papers;
  • Preparation of reports;
  • Other duties as assigned..

Required Education and Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience drafting and preparing federal and state pleadings, including but not limited to complaints, answers, motions, orders, etc.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required;
  • Paralegal Certification preferred; experience in writing and research may be substituted for education;
  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.

Job Title: Paralegal I or II—Centralized Intake Unit - Camden Office

Job Summary: Under the direction of the Managing Attorney, the Intake Paralegal is responsible for answering incoming telephone calls from prospective clients to determine their eligibility for services; conducting the initial legal interview, and providing advice and counsel or referral to a SJLS attorney.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Answer incoming calls from the SJLS Intake toll free line and determine caller’s eligibility for SJLS representation;
  • Conduct legal interviews;
  • Provide legal advice under the supervision of a licensed attorney;
  • Provide appropriate referrals to outside agencies or SJLS attorneys;
  • Record all case data and facts into a computerized case management system;
  • Prepare closing letters, transfer memos and weekly case disposition slips on completed cases, reflecting case status and correct closing codes;
  • Research legal issues as needed;
  • Assist with development of legal education materials;
  • Conduct community education and outreach as needed;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Qualifications:

  • Associated Degree or Paralegal Certification preferred;
  • One year paralegal experience preferred, preferably in a legal services environment;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) Required ;
  • Sensitivity to low-income individuals and families.
