Special Projects

Disaster Legal Assistance: LSNWJ provides legal assistance to low-income people and vulnerable seniors affected by disasters in matters affecting their essential needs, including disaster benefits such as disaster food stamps, disaster unemployment, FEMA and SBA, and housing issues arising from the disaster. In addition, LSNWJ is an active participant in the Long Term Recovery groups in our region, which provide a coordinated response to resolve the unmet needs of the most vulnerable people affected by disaster.

Health Care Access Project: Advice and representation to low-income people in matters involving access to health care. The priorities of HCAP are Medicaid eligibility, denials and reductions in medical care, NJ FamilyCare, Medicare, PAAD program and Charity care. HCAP may also be able to provide assistance in disputes that involve commercial insurance coverage, COBRA issues, access to medical records, privacy issues, limited English proficiency, lead poisoning, and access to services for the uninsured, including mental health and substance abuse treatment and other affirmative advocacy to expand health care access rights.

Language Services Initiative: LSNWJ delivers quality legal services to clients in their preferred language. LSNWJ provides language services as needed to ensure that limited English proficient (LEP) clients have meaningful access to LSNWJ services. Language services include assignment of bilingual advocates to LEP clients and contracted professional in-person and telephone-based interpreters and translators.

Legal Assistance for People Affected by HIV/AIDS: LSNWJ provides legal assistance in matters affecting the client’s basic needs to enable the client to live in the community and access the continuum of care.

LIBRE (Legal Intervention Brings Recovery and Empowerment) Project: A collaborative project with the domestic abuse service providers in Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Sussex and Warren Counties, LIBRE provides comprehensive and coordinated services to assist victims and survivors of domestic abuse. LSNWJ provides legal assistance in matters affecting the client’s essential needs, while the domestic abuse service agencies provide case management, counseling, safe shelter, and support groups.

Senior Legal Assistance: In cooperation with the County Offices on Aging, LSNWJ provides legal advice, representation and preparation of legal documents for vulnerable seniors age 60 or older. There are no income eligibility requirements for the Senior Legal Assistance Projects, however, the projects target the frail and vulnerable, minorities and impoverished.

Veterans Justice Initiative: VJI is a collaborative project of Merck & Co., Inc., Lowenstein Sandler, PC, Community Hope and LSNWJ through which veterans residing in the Homeless Veterans transition housing program at Lyons are provided legal assistance that helps them remove barriers to self-sufficiency and independent living.
