Language Access and Language Justice in New Jersey
Language is of ever-increasing importance as communities become more culturally diverse. According to a recent U.S. Census survey, one in four New Jersey households speak a language other than English at home and nearly a third of New Jerseyans age five and older speak a language other than English.
As of 2024, New Jersey law requires each State government entity in the Executive Branch to translate its vital documents into the seven most common non-English languages spoken by individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP). There is also a requirement for a language access plan, interpretation services, and appropriate signage.
This Justice Series webinar will address language access law, policy, and advocacy through different organizational approaches in furtherance of language access and language justice in New Jersey.
Panelists include: Jake Hofstetter, Policy Analyst, Migration Policy Institute, National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy; Lina Tocora, Director, LSNJ Language Services Unit; William Ryan, Translator/Interpreter, LSNJ Language Services Unit; Maria Vlahos, Manager of Language Services, NJ Administrative Office of the Courts; and Ian Fiedler, Policy Legal Specialist New Jersey Division on Civil Rights.
