Educational attainment provides a foundation for economic self-sufficiency and is an important factor in avoiding or escaping poverty. While the level of education has a direct impact on the ability of individuals to support themselves and their families, it often acts as a resource to deal with unexpected events and economic losses. Yet, data shows disparities in outcomes and students from disadvantaged backgrounds consistently underperform compared to their more economically advantaged peers. Further, True Poverty rates are higher for individuals with lower levels of education. These disparities are also evident for racial and ethnic minorities.
