Volunteers

Attorney Volunteers - Private Attorney Involvement (PAI) Program:

The Private Attorney Involvement (PAI) Program harnesses the energy and expertise of local attorneys who have agreed to donate their valuable time and expertise to provide assistance to low-income residents with civil legal problems. This program enables NNJLS to provide services to low-income residents with civil legal problems who may otherwise not be served due to funding limitations and service reductions. If you are a private attorney and interested in finding out more contact us at or register on line at PROBONONJ. If registering online, be sure to select "get started," then "enroll," and then "Northeast New Jersey Legal Services".

Attorneys who participate in the PAI Program and provide 25 hours of service to clients earn an exemption from the State requirement to accept mandatory municipal court assignments, and can choose the types of cases they wish to handle. In addition, PAI attorneys are eligible to participate in legal training provided by Legal Services of New Jersey, which can be used to meet mandatory CLE requirements. More importantly, attorneys participating in the PAI Program can feel a real sense of satisfaction, knowing that their time and experience have been used to help those who are in dire need of civil legal assistance but who cannot afford a private attorney.

Students and Interns

NNJLS is proud to host law school students, paralegals and other volunteers who wish to participate in internship programs sponsored by their schools, private law firms, or advocacy groups. Student interns are mentored by experienced staff attorneys and management in the areas of civil law practice of their choice, and assist staff attorneys throughout the legal process from client intake through court appearance. Student interns will typically need to secure outside funding for their internship projects; NNJLS will work with the student and his or her school to help the student earn class credit for their NNJLS internship activities.

Individuals who are interested in internship opportunities at NNJLS should send their resume, cover letter, and a brief description of the proposed internship project to:

Interns, Northeast New Jersey Legal Services
190 Moore Street, Suite 100
Hackensack, NJ 07601

Paralegals

Volunteer paralegals are needed to assist with Bankruptcy and Family law matters. Volunteering is also an excellent way to gain important experience in these areas of law.

Other Volunteers

NNJLS welcomes individuals and groups who wish to volunteer their time to make a difference for low-income residents in their community. Volunteers can assist attorney and support staff in administrative duties, interpreting for clients, and providing translations of NNJLS information guides and other materials. Individuals and groups who are interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities at NNJLS should email us at or call 201-792-6363.
