Disaster Assistance

NNJLS can provide legal assistance to members of the community who were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Through in-house and volunteer attorneys, outreach, and public education, our goal is to ensure that low-income residents who have suffered damages from the storm have a committed advocate to help them resolve their legal issues.

NNJLS staff attorneys as well as our volunteer private attorneys are experienced in providing the highest quality legal advice and representation to their clients. They can provide residents who have suffered damages due to the hurricane with legal assistance regarding:

  • Appealing claim denials from FEMA and private insurance carriers;
  • Evictions for non-payment of rent due to the storm;
  • Housing habitability issues arising from flooding, power outages, and other storm damages;
  • Home Repair and Contractor Disputes;
  • Timely return of security deposits for clients who needed to relocate after the storm;
  • Help with finding other sources of housing assistance;
  • Representation at administrative agency hearings for denials of applications for emergency public benefits, such as food stamps, unemployment assistance, and other public benefits;
  • Other legal matters experienced by victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Disaster Assistance Outreach:

In their work with the low-income community, NNJLS attorneys have found that not all residents with a civil legal problem need direct assistance by an attorney. In order to provide these residents with the information they need to advocate for themselves, NNJLS has developed in-house legal clinics to meet the needs of clients who can represent themselves in simple legal matters. NNJLS staff attorneys can provide in-house clinic trainings to residents who have suffered damages from the hurricane in matters such as landlord-tenant law, security deposit returns and small claims court actions.

Volunteer Attorneys needed:

Private-practice attorneys who wish to volunteer their time and experience to helping hurricane victims can do so through NNJLS Private Attorney Involvement (PAI) Program. With the increase demand for services experienced in the aftermath of the storm, NNJLS has need of attorneys with expertise in housing, insurance, contract and public benefit matters. Private attorneys who are interested in handling complex litigation related to Hurricane Sandy are also needed. For more information, see Volunteers.
