Family Reunification Day Celebration

Part of the annual nationwide American Bar Association Family Reunification celebratory effort, Legal Services of New Jersey celebrated Family Reunification Day at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick on Monday, September 16, 2013, at 2 p.m. This year's event focused on the importance of visitation between children in out-of-home placements and their families for a successful reunification. Visitation between the child and the family has been deemed as an essential factor in achieving a successful reunification. Effective visitation practices go beyond the logistics of scheduling and transportation. They can provide an opportunity to comfort children during a difficult time, help parents develop stronger parenting skills, and foster positive parent-child interaction.

LSNJ was proud to honor several successfully reunified families from Ocean, Essex, Passaic, and Warren counties. Additionally, we honored two Reunification Day heroes, Jennifer Cunningham, Office of the Public Defender from Atlantic and Cape May counties, and Nada Salloum, DCP&P case worker from Passaic County.

Visitation: An Indispensable Tool for Reunification

This video examines the various approaches to visitation for these families, and the benefits and shortfalls of the current system. It was produced by Legal Services of New Jersey and presented at the 2013 NJ Family Reunification Day celebration.
